Photogrammetric application for high precision positioning of drones
The experiments to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation requiere high precision polarized calibrators. For this, our group is developing a drone based calibrator able to provide a polarized reference signal on the sky, requiring a high precision metrology system able to provide an extremely accurate position and aim of the drone while flying. Our system is based on photogrammetry (patent pending) and can monitor the polarization angle of the source with better than 0.1 degrees of absolute accuracy. In this IPRE the student will contribute to develop this metrology system, performing field tests with the drone, running experimental data analysis, developing of specialized photogrammetry software, and, if possible, can even participate in real site tests at the astronomical sites of northern Chile.

Modeling of the atmospheric signal and other contaminants in cosmological data
The measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation done from the ground suffer from atmospheric contamination, as well as other contaminants. This justifies the development of new models to identify and treat these contaminants, aiming to produce clean maps of the background signal. Our group is an active collaborator of several CMB experiments installed in Chile, contributing among other things to the analysis and reduction of raw data, including the modeling of contamination and systematic effects contained in the data. In this IPRE the student will develop computational and mathematical methods to model and extract the atmospheric signal from real raw data obtained by the ACT telescope. His/her results will be potentially implemented in the real pipeline for the production of better CMB maps.

Electromagnetic simulations of radiotelescopes
The cosmological experiments to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation require and exquisite control of the systematic effects introduced by the electromagnetic response of the telescopes. Our research group directly collaborates with several of the main CMB experiments installed in Chile, contributing with the characterization and control of their optical systematic effects. In this IPRE, the student will develop electromagnetic simulations of the optical response of these telescopes, studying their systematic effects and imperfections, significantly contributing the the scientific studies performed by these experiments.

Virtual Reality Applications for Astrophysics
Numerical simulations are used to model complex astrophysical systems, from planetary systems to accretion discs around black holes. Many times, it is a challenge to analyse and even view the simulation data. Our group has already developed 360-degree animations that place the viewer at the position of the Milky Way's central black hole <https://youtu.be/YKzxmeABbkU>, or in the middle of two stars passing by each other. We are now interested to go one step further, and develop virtual reality (VR) applications, in which the user can move freely through the simulated system and manipulate it. We are looking for a student interested in actively participating in this development, using our VR hardware. While there are no formal requirements, we expect the student to have good programming skills and to be able to communicate in English. Experience and/or a strong interest in VR, Astrophysics, or digital animation will be considered a plus.
