07-12-2023 Enhancing Multi-Dimension Exploratory Analyses through the Devil’s Quadrangle
In a first stage, we have devised a method for filtering event logs based on Process Performance Indicators (PPI) from the four dimensions considered by the Devil’s Quadrangle. You can see the implemented method at https://bit.ly/dq_dashboard. In a second stage, we enhanced the implementation of the method for calculating distinct metrics in a centralized manner. In a third stage, we seek to incorporate additional value by providing tools that facilitate the realization of exploratory analyses. Specifically, you will be tasked with: • Calculating and visualizing the Pareto front of every pair of dimensions. • Defining a metric for the identification of cases with optimal performance. • Visualizing the Devil’s Quadrangle for the expected values of a group of cases. • Studying the feasibility of incorporating a dimension related to resources to the method.

07-12-2023 Preliminary Research about Operational Support Focused on Costs
We are working in a research project centered on enhancing the analysis of the costs dimension with Process Mining. The goal is to define methods (step-by-step guides) for analyzing costs jointly with other dimensions, which will be validated through their application in real processes. For the above, we have defined several subprojects. This subproject focuses on the first steps that are necessary for later defining methods for performing costs-focused operational support. Among the tasks where you can collaborate are: • Perform literature review regarding operational support associated to the costs dimension. • Create a simulated environment for testing operational support algorithms and methods. • Implement existing operational support methods and test them in the simulated environment.

We are working in a research project centered on enhancing the analysis of the costs dimension with Process Mining. The goal is to define methods (step-by-step guides) for analyzing costs jointly with other dimensions, which will be validated through their application in real processes. For the above, we have defined several subprojects. This subproject focuses on formally defining cost-effectiveness for process-oriented contexts, as well as methods for its measurement. Among the tasks where you can collaborate are: • Research process-oriented metrics for measuring cost-effectiveness. • Study publications of disciplines where cost-effectiveness is used. • Define a formal way for measuring cost-effectiveness. • Define metrics for measuring cost-effectiveness in processes. • Design a method for visualizing the defined metrics. • Verify the feasibility of the method with simulated data. • Validate the utility of the method with real data.

14-07-2023 Multi-Perspective Conformance Checking Centered in Costs
Given an event log and a model of the ideal process, we can verify the conformance between them. Generally, conformance checking is applied over the flow of activities of the process, but there are ways for considering other perspectives. These focus on making corrections based on rules included in the model. We identified several challenges that could be addressed, such as the definition of additional rules than those of the model, extracted from the log, the incorporation of rule in distinct levels, and the inclusion of complementary conformance metrics. We have some initial ideas, and want to study their novelty and feasibility, as well as apply them. Specifically, you will be tasked with: • Reviewing multi-perspective conformance checking literature to verify the state-of-the-art and novelty of the ideas. • Proposing additional ideas and/or complement the existing ones. • Implementing the proposed ideas and apply them over simulated data.

28-12-2022 Simulink modelling of a reversible solid oxide cell process plant
Reversible solid oxide cells (rSOCs) are electrochemical reactors that combine in one reactor both modes of operation as a fuel cell or electrolyser to produce electrical energy or hydrogen, respectively. These cells have great potential as a renewable energy storage technology. The objective of this research line is to study and optimise the operation of an rSOC plant by modelling the different process units and their integration. The activities to be carried out are: ● Literature review on fuel cells and high-temperature electrolysers in rSOC to define the different units and mathematical models to be considered in an rSOC plant. One of the following: ● Implement heat exchangers and compressible flow submodels in MATLAB/Simulink. ● Implement an electrochemical cell model as a Simulink S-function.

08-07-2020 Understandability of process models by domain experts – theory and applications
The project “Understandability of process models by domain experts – theory and applications” aims to deepen about how the process models are understood by individuals who, without necessarily being experts in BPMN, are experts in the field of the modeled process (domain experts). For example, healthcare staff with respect to the procedure of placement of a venous catheter. The project aims to define a conceptual framework on the factors that influence how domain experts understand BPMN models. Then, seeks to apply the above as (1) a set of modeling guidelines then applied to model-based training, and (2) process mining algorithm(s) that allow the repair models according to these guidelines. The project has, therefore, the following topics in which interested students are welcome: literature review, design and execution of experiments, and programming.
