Age of Information and its effect on autonomous vehicle platoons
Vehicle platoons are a promising application for future intelligent transportation systems. The control and stability of the platoon depend on the timeliness of the control information, captured through the concept of “Age of Information” (AoI). AoI has proven to be an effective metric for measuring how recent the information is in IoT applications. Given V2V wireless communications, AoI can be affected by various factors such as transmission period, channel interference, and various delays. The proposed research aims to study how AoI affects vehicle platooning systems and its relationship with platoon topology, wireless channel models, and other communication system parameters. It also seeks to determine conditions on AoI to ensure platoon stability, which is essential for efficiently designing safe autonomous vehicle platoons.
