17-08-2023 Characterization of river plume internal waves through remote sensing
Internal waves are ubiquitous in the ocean and atmosphere, and their effects influence climate, oceanic heat transfer, biology, and chemistry. To exist, a perturbation of a stratified fluid must occur. River plumes can generate internal waves, commonly via an internal hydraulic jump as the plume transitions from supercritical to subcritical flow. These internal waves have been studied in large river plumes, but limited work exists on small plumes, owing to the difficulty of measuring the highly spatially and temporally variable process. This project will use drone measurements from the Rio Marchant plume in the Melimoyu Fjord to quantify internal wave characteristics (celerity, wavelength), and relate them to environmental fluid mechanics variables and analytical stratified wave solutions. These measurements will be compared with high resolution satellite imagery (Planet Labs Cubesats) to observe and quantify the presence of these internal waves on larger spatial scales. The results of this work are expected to contribute to ongoing numerical modeling work and to inform future field
